How do I teach my dog to pick up objects that have been dropped?

I've seen this done before! Some dogs get it and some don't but this is how I saw it done...First show the object to your dog, then say "pick it up", or "retrieve", then toss the object down and repeat the command, each time you get the dog to touch the object with it's mouth give a treat and praise. When the dog picks up the object say "bring it" and then keep rewarding and praising along the way. I saw a small dog pick this trick up quickly but have never got my dogs to do it. Good luck!
